Shiny, an interactive data visualization tool, has found its place among data experts who aim to make complex analysis accessible to a lay audience. By collating data from various sources and leveraging Shiny dashboards and R Markdown documents, users have been able to generate advanced analysis and dynamic visualizations. This flexibility is further enhanced by the continuous support and development of packages within the Shiny ecosystem, allowing users to harness the latest improvements.

One key use case of Shiny lies in the commercial sector, where it has been employed to develop dashboards for monitoring indicators in different areas of business. These web dashboards have greatly improved visibility across the organization, ensuring that relevant stakeholders have access to essential business insights. Moreover, Shiny's ability to share analyses and facilitate interaction with the data has proven invaluable in scenarios where multiple analyses or what-if scenarios need to be explored.

Researchers in the Research and Development department have also benefited from Shiny's capabilities. It has served as a platform for delivering dashboards based on specific models generated in R. Notably, these models encompass disease modeling, which often involves working with diverse patient data such as medical notes, Rx records, fluids, and various data structures like text, columns, time series, and images. Shiny's interactive nature allows researchers to delve into the intricacies of their models while empowering them to effectively communicate their findings.

Dynamic Visualization: Some users have found the dynamic visualization feature of the product to be particularly helpful, allowing them to showcase interactive drop downs and sliders for analyzing data in an engaging and interactive manner.

Effective Trend Tracking: Reviewers have mentioned that the product enables them to create trend indexes effectively. This feature allows for easy tracking and analysis of trends over time, providing valuable insights for analytical work.

Data Transformation and Automation: Users appreciate the ability to build repeatable analytical pipelines with the product, automating and streamlining their data analysis processes. They find this feature useful for data transformation and visualization tasks.

Some users have found Shiny to be time-consuming and challenging due to the need for excellent knowledge of R programming and coding skills. They feel that it takes a significant amount of time and expertise to work with the platform effectively.

Several reviewers have mentioned that there is a steep learning curve associated with Shiny, making it difficult for beginners to get started. They have expressed that it can be overwhelming to navigate the platform initially.

Users have expressed their frustration with the lack of easy ways to connect to data sources in Shiny. Additionally, they have mentioned the need for better access control features that allow different roles within their organizations to have appropriate levels of access.

We use Shiny in our labs to create data dashboards for a lay audience. It's a very effective tool for creating data visualizations for a lay audience. Essentially it allows data experts to create important visualizations that can be easily accessed by the end-users we are targeting. We use it frequently.
  • Data tables are appealing to look at.
  • Enables us to create trend indexes in an effective way.
  • Easy to integrate with the rest of my R syntax.
  • There's definitely a learning curve.
  • There's a lot of functionality such as HTML widgets that require more than just R experience.
  • There are a variety of tools available, but it can be tough to know where to start.
I think that Shiny is a great tool for someone who wants to create data visualizations outside of Tableau Desktop or Power BI, which are both common in the data visualization industry. I think that it may be less suitable for folks who have the funds for Tableau or Power Bi licenses.
  • Scatterplot
  • Index trends.
  • DataTables
  • Allows us to communicate with lay audience.
  • Allows us to create effective visuals for clients.
  • Allows us to save money compared to expensive other visualization software.
Shiny is much cheaper to use than Tableau Desktop and Microsoft Power BI. It's not as fancy, and maybe not as effective, but you save lots of money by using Shiny over the previously listed alternatives. The graphs and charts you can make in Shiny are very good for communicating data to a lay audience.

We use Shiny for the development of dashboards for monitoring indicators of many areas of the business, mostly commercial. This product has allowed us to provide better visibility of various aspects of the business thanks to the development of tools and web dashboards that allow access to many people within the organization.
  • Easy to develop with R
  • Flexibility when developing dashboards
  • Good documentation
  • Big community with a lot of examples
  • Easier ways to connect to data sources
  • Better access control for different roles in the organization
  • Video material that allows a better learning experience
Shiny is very good for developing dashboards or web applications with specific functionalities. But it is not so easy to use to develop from scratch, it is always better to use another tool to have a general idea of what is expected of a dashboard and then develop the most specific functionalities in Shiny. It is much more flexible than other tools and that is why I consider it to be better for most cases, only that it is more complex to develop or has a longer learning curve.
  • Easy access to web applications along de organization
  • Flexibility of what can be done with the tool
  • Documentation and code reuse
  • Easy access to information and indicators
  • Good ROI
  • Make the organization more data driven
Both Tableau and Power BI are easier to learn and allow you to develop dashboards in a faster and more intuitive way, but both have limitations in what you can do with them and if you want to do something more specific it is always more complicated. RStudio is much more flexible and in most cases it allows you to do certain things in a simpler way despite being more complicated to learn.
